He was attached to POL supplying Patton, and was directly behind, or sometimes with, the advance units. He brought it home after the war.The bottom line is this: Mauser firing pins don't wear. If it's short, somebody made a mistake. Disassemble the bolt, measure the firing pin protrusion and work backwards.
